The historical Vienna butterfly house (Schmetterlinghaus) is located right in the heart of the city. it is part of the Hofburg palace, and just 200 metres from the opera building.
The butterfly house is situated inside one of the worlds most magnificent “Jugendstil” greenhouses which is a tourist attraction in its own right.
This masterpiece of design and engineering, which used to be the private domain of Kaiser Franz Josef and Sissi is now open to the public and is one of the most popular tourist attractions in central Vienna.
As you walk around the butterfly house, under waterfalls and inside hollow trees, colourful live tropical butterflies will flutter around you.
